HERSHEY, Pa. – Carter Rowney continued his hot run since returning to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton line-up, as the Penguins took down the Hershey Bears, 5-3, at Giant Center on Wednesday night.

Rowney tallied the game-winning goal with 2:00 left in regulation – extending his goal streak to a career-best four games – as the Penguins improved to 29-8-3-0 on the season.

Hershey’s Nathan Walker capitalized on a defensive zone turnover by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to score the game’s first goal at 17:17 of the first period.

The second period was far more kind to the Penguins. Tom Sestito scored just 29 seconds into the middle frame, and later set up Teddy Blueger to give the Pens a 2-1 lead before the five-minute mark.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton extended its lead to 3-1 on an unassisted shorthanded goal by Josh Archibald at 9:47 of the second period. Archibald’s shorty was his second of the season and the Penguins’ fourth in the 2016-17 season.

The Bears came out in the third period desperate to tie the game, and did just that with goals from Paul Carey and Darren Dietz at 6:16 and 10:38, respectively.

With the score knotted in the second half of the third, both teams traded scoring chances until Rowney banged in a rebound with exactly two minutes remaining in regulation. Sestito was credited with an assist on Rowney’s tally, giving him his third point of the night (1G-2A). It was Sestito’s second three-point game of the season, both coming against the Bears.

Garrett Wilson sealed the victory for the Penguins with an empty net goal one minute and 23 seconds later.

Tristan Jarry finished the night with 28 saves for his league-leading 17th win. Joe Cannata turned aside 20 shots in defeat.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s next game is Friday, Jan. 20, when they take on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at PPL Center at 7:05 p.m. The Penguins’ next home showing is Saturday, Jan. 21, and once again their opponent is Hershey. Less than 900 tickets remain for Saturday night’s contest against the Bears.
