The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return home after a four-game road stretch to face off against the Utica Comets at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Penguins (30-14-3-1, 64 pts, .667%) currently sit in second place in the Atlantic Division, while the Comets (27-14-6-4, 64 pts, .627%) hold down the third spot in the North Division.

Saturday’s game is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season.

The Penguins kicked off a three-in-three weekend set on Friday night with a 12-3 loss to the Rochester Americans at Blue Cross Arena. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lost three defensemen to injury throughout the course of the game, as Rochester saw three different players score twice. Jarrett Burton, Cody Wydo and Greg McKegg tallied for the Penguins.

The Comets downed the Binghamton Devils by a score of 3-1 Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center. The win extended the Comets’ point streak to 14 games. Guillaume Brisebois, Zack MacEwen and Michael Chaput netted goals to put the Comets up 3-0. Richard Bachman finished with 23 saves to improve his record to 9-7-4.


The Penguins have the best winning percentage in the AHL at home at .750

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton became the fourth team to reach 30 wins this season. The Penguins have failed to record 30 wins in only two of their 19 seasons.

Casey DeSmith has tended goal in all four of the Penguins’ shootouts this season and has made 10 saves on 11 attempts.

Daniel Sprong leads all AHL rookies in shots per game (3.16), and he also ranks second in points per game (1.00) and goals (20).

The Penguins are 7-1-1-0 when Gage Quinney scores a goal this season.

Newcomer Joseph Cramarosa got a point in his first game with the Penguins, tallying an assist.

The Comets extended their point streak to 14 games. The streak is a new record for the Comets, who have not lost in regulation since suffering a 3-2 loss to Syracuse on January 12. Utica is outscoring their opponents 41-28 during their point streak.

Richard Bachman has won four straight starts and is unbeaten in regulation in eight straight starts. Bachman is 6-0-2 with a 1.84 goals against average and a .939% save percentage.

Thatcher Demko is unbeaten in regulation in six straight starts and has won six of his last eight games. Demko is 5-0-1 with a 1.91 goals-against average and a .937% save percentage.

Despite missing their top three point, assist, and power play goal producers (on recall to Vancouver) the Comets have continued to excel.

Rookie Zach MacEwen leads the Comets in all offensive categories among rookies (8+18)

Jayson Megna spent parts of three seasons with the Penguins scoring 66 points (40+26) in 144 games.

Frank Corrado spent two seasons with Utica from 2013-15 appearing in 94 games adding 33 points (13+20)

Andrey Pedan spent three seasons with the Comets scoring 45 points (15+30) in 139 games

Tom Sestito played 10 games in Utica in 2014-15 adding one goal

Comets coach Trent Cull played 71 games for the Penguins scoring 26 points (11+15) in 2000-01
