For the second day in a row, the Pittsburgh Penguins spotted the opposition an early multiple-goal lead, but ended up skating away with a victory, as they downed the Florida Panthers, 6-3, at the Kitchener Rookie Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The win upped the Penguins’ record to 2-0-0 headed into Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Senators, while Florida fell to 1-1-0.
The Panthers opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the game, as David Brine beat goaltender John Curry from close range for his first of the tournament.
Brian wasted little time in picking up his second goal, netting a power play tally at 2:52 as Jonathan Filewich sat in the penalty box on a tripping call.
Tim Wallace pulled the Penguins to within on goal at 4:15 of the first, but Keegan Dansereau regained the two-goal cushion for the Panthers at 9:35.
Pittsburgh controlled the second period, using goals by Filewich, Kyle Rank and Alex Grant to take a 4-3 lead into the third period.
Unsigned draftee Brian Ihnacak and third-year pro Ryan Stone added goals in the final frame to complete the Penguins scoring.
NOTES: Scratches for the Penguins were Kris Letang, Tyler Kennedy and Kevin Henderson…Pittsburgh served as the home club in the game…Aaron Boogaard and Tanner Glass fought to a draw following Ihnacak’s third period tally.
