Goaltender Ryan Daniels recorded the first shutout of the weekend, and Kaspars Daugavins and Alexander Nikulin recorded two points apiece (1+1), as the Ottawa Senators posted a 3-0 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins prospects at the Kitchener Rookie Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Daniels, who ranked fourth in the Ontario Hockey League with 37 victories last season, stopped all 36 Penguins shots he faced en route to the victory. The win allowed the Senators (2-1) to overtake the Pens (2-1) for the top spot in the tournament standings by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The victory guaranteed the Senators a spot in the championship game on Monday evening. The Penguins were awaiting the result of the Florida-Toronto game at 6:30pm to see if they would be facing off with Ottawa for a second day in a row. Should the Panthers defeat the Maple Leafs by four goals or more, Florida would take the other spot in the final. |
