Tyler Kennedy led the way with two goals and Ty Conklin made 31 saves as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 3-2 win against the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
The win raised the Penguins’ record to 2-0-0-0 on the young season, while Syracuse fell to 0-2-0-0.
Jeff Taffe’s goal was the only tally in a sluggish first period, which saw the Penguins outshoot the Crunch by a 7-4 margin.
Things opened up considerably in the second, as Kennedy posted back-to-back goals 16 minutes apart. The second-year pro rifled a shot from the point during an early power play to give the Pens a 2-0 lead, and he later picked up his third goal in two games with 2:14 to play in the middle period.
Geoff Platt ruined Conklin’s shutout bid with 13.8 seconds remaining in the second, scoring while on the man advantage.
The 3-1 score held until the 19:00 mark of the third, when Derek MacKenzie took advantage of a scramble in front of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton net, and poked home his second of the campaign behind a prone Conklin.
The Penguins will look to keep their record clean as they head to Philadelphia for a 5:00pm contest on Sunday, their first road foray of the season.
