WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins erased a two-goal deficit in the third period, but the Springfield Falcons were still able to pull out a 3-2 victory at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Early in the third period the Penguins found themselves down by a score of 2-0 and in a shorthanded situation. Harry Zolnierczyk made a steal at center ice and skated in alone on Falcons goalie Jeremy Smith before being tripped up on the play. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward was awarded a penalty shot and put the puck up over the shoulder of the Springfield netminder to cut the lead in half at 2:58.
The Penguins knotted the match, 2-2 at 11:43 with Nick Drazenovic leading a 2-on-1 rush and setting up Paul Thompson in the slot for his first of the season.
Moments later, Springfield received a 4-on-3 power play and quickly converted on Jonathan Marchessault’s one-timer from the far circle with 7:22 left in regulation.
The game’s first goal came at 10:42 of the first period during four-on-four hockey. Springfield’s Broc Little skated into the far corner before throwing a pass to Patrick McNeill at the right circle, where he settled down the puck and squeezed a wrist shot over the shoulder of Jeff Deslauriers.
With 12.8 seconds left in the second and the Falcons on the man-advantage, McNeil drove home his second goal of the game to put Springfield ahead, 2-0.
Deslauriers dropped to 11-6-2 on the season with 18 saves on 21 shots. Smith stopped 16-of-18 for Springfield.
