MANCHESTER, N.H.  – Brian Gibbons figured in all of the scoring for the Penguins – recording two goals and two assists – as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton downed the Manchester Monarchs with 4-3 overtime victory at Verizon Wireless Arena.   The Penguins wrapped up their perfect three-game, three-day weekend to stay unbeaten on the season at 6-0-0-0.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Manchester skated into the third period in a2-2 deadlock and it was Gibbons giving his team their third lead of the match at 5:50.  Coming in hard on the forecheck, Mike Carman poked the puck to Gibbons in front, where he sneaked a shot under the arm of Monarchs goalie Jean-Francoise Berube.
Manchester would pull even and force overtime when Nick Deslauriers put a rebound over the blocker of Penguins netminder Jeff Deslauriers with 4:28 remaining in regulation.
The extra session lasted only 22 seconds as Gibbons led an odd-man rush and fed Brendan Mikkelson atop the right circle for a slapshot that beat Berube to the right side of the net.  The goal was MIkkelson’s first for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and completed Gibbons’ career-best four-point game.
The Penguins opened up the scoring at 8:08 of the first while on the man-advantage.  An pass from behind the net by Gibbons clipped of a defenseman’s stick and bounced off the back of Berube across the goal line.
Sean Backman helped Manchester knot the contest at one just 1:31 before the intermission, redirecting Andy Andreoff’s centering pass inside the near post.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took back its lead at 11:35 of second period after Gibbons hopped out of the penalty box.  Stepping onto the ice, Gibbons picked up a loose puck at the Monarchs blueline and floated a pass to a streaking Andrew Ebbett, who backhanded a shot around the pad of Berube.
The Monarchs struck again with 1:11 left in the period on a power play goal by Andrew Bodnarchuk
Deslauriers raised his record on the season to 5-0-0 with 31 saves on 34 shots.  Berube made 19 saves for the Monarchs.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head to Binghamton on Friday, Oct. 25 to battle the Senators at 7:05 p.m.
