PENGUINS GET PAST SENATORS, 3-2
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Brandon DeFazio scored with 3:07 left in regulation to give the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-2 win over the Binghamton Senators at Broom County Veterans Memorial Arena and snap a five-game winless streak.
With Wilkes-Barre holding the 2-1 lead heading into the third, Binghamton came out flying in attempt to knot the score. The Penguins were able to keep the Senators at bay on an early man-advantage, but a penalty shot would be awarded to Binghamton after a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton player gloved the puck in the crease.
Scott Munroe kept the score the same with a blocker save on Nikita Filatov’s attempt, but the Senators would break through on a power play that quickly followed.
Josh Godfrey made the score, 2-2, at 3:41 with a long shot from the far boards the sneaked its way into the back of the Penguins goal.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had the final response with DeFazio redirecting Philip Samuelsson’s bid from the blueline through the pads of Robin Lehner.
Bryan Lerg’s third goal in as many games gave the Penguins the 1-0 lead 4:37 into the first. Samuelsson’s shot from the far point was knocked down in the slot, but Lerg quickly sent the loose puck past Lehner for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
The Senators tied the match at 7:18 as David Dziurzynski toe dragged around the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman and rattled a shot off the post and into the net.
The Penguins would own a 2-1 edge going into the intermission after a 5-on-3 power play in the latter minutes of the first. Niko Dimitrakos threw a shot toward the Binghamton crease that came to the stick of Colin McDonald on the far post for a rebound goal at 13:39.
Munroe turned aside 28 shots to raise his record to 2-1-2 on the season.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head to Norfolk on Tuesday, November 29 to battle the Admirals at 7:15 PM. For more information, visit www.wbspenguins.com.
