SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Goalie Iiro Tarkki made 33 saves and Kyle Palmieri registered a goal and an assist – including the game-winner – to lead the Syracuse Crunch to a 5-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday at Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter. Already up by one coming out of the first period, Patrick Maroon made the score 2-0 for Syracuse, finding a loose puck on the far post and tucking it past Brad Thiessen. Geoff Walker got Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on the board at 12:18 of the second as he pounced on a bouncing puck in front of the crease and threw a shot over a sprawled out Iiro Tarkki for his fifth goal of the season. Syracuse re-established its two-goal cushion just 20.4 seconds before the break when Nick Bonino won a draw that Palmieri quickly snapped to the left corner that allowed the Crunch to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room. The Crunch struck early for the third consecutive period with Troy Bodie redirecting Mat Clark’s point shot over the shoulder of Thiessen at 2:51 for a 4-1 lead. Brian Gibbons broke in alone with seven minutes left in regulation to deposit a backhander past the right skate of Tarkki, but Peter Holland responded 1:35 later for Syracuse to complete the scoring. The Crunch went up 1-0 in the opening five minutes with the first power play of the game. A rush up ice saw Dan Sexton lure the defense over to the right side before sending a pass to the far dot that Brandon McMillan wristed inside the far post. Thiessen finished with 24 saves for the Penguins as his record goes to 10-6-2 on the season. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins travel to face the Binghamton Senators on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:05 PM. For more information, contact the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit
