PENGUINS’ COMEBACK EFFORT FALLS SHORT AGAINST CRUNCH

PENGUINS’ COMEBACK EFFORT FALLS SHORT AGAINST CRUNCH

Walker’s two-goal night can save W-B/S in loss

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Kyle Palmieri’s two-goal night matched a pair of goals by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Geoff Walker and gave the Syracuse Crunch a 4-3 win over the Penguins on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Down 3-1 as they entered the final frame, an early 5-on-4 advantage allowed the Penguins to pull within one as Walker tipped Alex Grant’s slapshot under the glove of goalie Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers.

Palmieri would provide the eventual game-winner with 7:10 left in regulation after a turnover by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in its own zone.  From below the goal line, Mark Bell quick sent a pass to the hashmarks that Palmieri rocketed over the shoulder of Brad Thiessen to make the score, 4-2.

Walker shrunk the Crunch’s lead back down to one less than a minute later with his second of the contest, but the Drouin-Deslauriers repeatedly denied the Penguins down the stretch from potting the equalizer.

With the score tied at one in the second, Syracuse converted on the power play for the second time in as many chances to go up, 2-1.  Some tic-tac-toe passing off a faceoff win in the Penguins’ end freed up Crunch defenseman Kyle Cumiskey for the one-timer from slot at 6:36 of the frame.

Three minutes later, Palmieri padded Syracuse’s lead when he reversed direction behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s net and wrapped a backhand attempt inside the far post.

Thiessen finished the game with 25 saves on 29 shots as his record goes to 12-10-2 this season.

It was the Crunch jetting out to the 1-0 lead just after they hopped onto the man-advantage after 4-on-4 play.   Coming out of the penalty box, Peter Holland led Matt Smaby for the breakaway goal at 10:29.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had a response 44 seconds later with Paul Thompson rapping a slapshot off the chest of Drouin-Deslauriers and Matt Rust throwing the rebound through the five-hole for his second of the season.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday, January 10 as they face the Admirals in Norfolk at 7:15 PM.  For more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
