Picard’s Hat Trick Leads Penguins Past Sharks
O’Reilly records three assists for Pens
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Alexandre Picard registered the Penguins’ first hat trick of the season to help his team defeat the Worcester Sharks, 4-1, on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The Sharks jumped on the home team at the start of the contest, holding an 8-1 shot advantage over the first five minutes, but it was the Penguins owning at 3-0 lead after the twenty minutes.
Picard put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton up 1-0 at 6:28 of the first with a high shot from the near point that hit off a body in front of the Worcester crease and down past goalie Tyson Sexsmith.
The Penguins hopped on the power play soon thereafter and needed only 12 seconds convert with Ryan Craig slamming in the rebound from Simon Despres’ slapshot.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton struck again on the man-advantage 1:22 before the intermission as Picard’s one-timer from the top of the far circle skittered inside the right post. Back-up goaltender Harri Sateri would come into the game for Sexsmith, who finished with seven saves on 10 shots.
After a scoreless second period, Picard completed his hat trick at 7:07 of the third with a 5-on-4 power play goal, his eighth overall of the season.
Penguins’ goalie Scott Munroe had his shutout bid spoiled with 7:28 remaining during a Sharks’ man-advantage, when John McCarthy tapped Tim Kennedy’s centering feed into an open net.
Munroe turned aside the other 27 shots he faced to raise his record to 16-6-3 on the season.
Picard’s hat trick was the Penguins’ first since Nick Johnson accomplished the feat on Dec. 29, 2010 against Syracuse.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 3-for-9 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
