Munroe Shuts Out Whale Once Again
Registers third shutout in third start versus Connecticut
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Scott Munroe made 27 saves as the Penguins blanked the Connecticut Whale, 3-0, on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Munroe recorded shutouts in all three starts against the Whale this season, making 82 saves overall – the lone blemish coming in a 1-0 shootout loss on October 9.
Simon Despres’ fifth goal of the season gave the Penguins a 1-0 edge at 12:16 of the first period. Cal O’Reilly stickhandled into the Connecticut zone and found the rookie defenseman as he skated across the blueline for a wrist shot that sailed by Whale goalie Chad Johnson.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lit the lamp twice in the first six minutes of the second period to build a comfortable 3-0 cushion
Forty-nine seconds in, Bryan Lerg took advantage of a fumbled puck by a Connecticut defenseman at the Penguins blueline. He raced up-ice on a breakaway and sneaked a backhand shot past the skate of Johnson for his 26th goal of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton then cashed in on their first power play of game, coming at 5:10 of the same period. Jason Williams needed only eight seconds of man-advantage time to wire a cross-crease pass that Geoff Walker easily tapped-in for his 12th power play goal and 18th marker overall.
Munroe picked up his fifth shutout of the season as his record went to 19-9-3. Johnson fell to 22-18-5, turning aside 24 shots for the Whale.
