A pair of power play goals was enough to give the St. John’s IceCaps a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Final on Thursday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The win was the third in a row for the IceCaps, who now hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, with Game Five slated for Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre.
The game remained scoreless for the first 39-and-a-half minutes before Will O’Neill’s one-timer dinged off the post and bounced in behind Peter Mannino during a five-on-three power play for his first goal of the postseason.
The Penguins netted their first home goal of the series at 6:48 of the third period when Brian Dumoulin’s point shot deflected off of the skate of a St. John’s defenseman and beat Michael Hutchinson glove side for the defenseman’s third goal of the postseason.
But Josh Lunden took advantage of the IceCaps’ ninth power play of the night, grabbing a loose puck behind the Penguins net and wrapping a shot around for his first goal of the playoffs at 9:19.
Mannino was outstanding despite suffering the loss, stopping 29 of 31 shots on the night. Hutchinson turned aside 17 pucks in the win.
The Penguins will look to stave off elimination this Saturday night when they host the IceCaps in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Final at 7:05pm. Good seats for Saturday night’s game are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office or by calling the Penguins at 570-208-7367.
