10:52PM And that will do it for me here at CONSOL Energy Center. I will be running around getting interviews tomorrow for rounds 2 through 7. Stay tuned Penguins fans. Sounds like more new coming out the Pittsburgh camp sometime soon. Thank you to all who followed and tuned in. Have a good night!
10:51PM The first round of the NHL Entry Draft comes to end with the Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings selecting Tanner Pearson of the Barrie Colts with the 30th and final pick.
10:47PM Next to last pick in the 1st round and New Jersey takes Stefan Matteau, also of the US Developmental Team. His dad was this guy. Stefan is the highest-rated forward out of the USNTD Program.
10:44PM We're wrapping up the 1st round here at CONSOL Energy Center as the NY Rangers take D Brady Skjei of the US Developmental Team. He's off to the University of Minnesota next season. NJ is on the clock.
10:41PM In the meantime, big congratulations to Henrik Samuelsson, younger brother of WBS Penguins d-man, Philip and son of NHL-veteran, Ulf. Henrik goes to the Phoenix Coyotes with the 28th pick of the 1st round.
10:38PM And we are back from downstairs where there was a huuuuuuuuuuge media scrum for Olli Maatta. Rumored GM that Ray Shero would be out after the 22nd pick to discuss the first round, but instead he'll be speaking with the media at the conclusion of the first round.
9:57PM With the 22nd overall pick, the Pens select defenseman Olli Maatta of the London Knights. Read about this highly tauted Finn here. With that, I'm heading back downstairs to get some video/audio.
9:50PM After trading down to No. 21, the Flames take defenseman Mark Jankowski from Stanstead College, a boarding school in Quebec. HIs prospect info can be found here. The crowd erupts as Gary Bettman announces the Pens are on the clock...
9:41PM Paul Holmgren was "going to thank the city of Pittsburgh" as the boos reign down on him from the fans. His selection can barely be heard as Scott Laughton of the Oshawa Generals is picked at No. 20. Central Scouting has him ranked 28th among North American skaters, but he did post 21 goals and 32 assists in 64 games. A lot of talent on the board ahead of Laughton, but Philly obviously saw something they liked.
9:39PM The Lightning take Andrey Vasilevskiy with 19th pick, their second of the 1st round. Central Scouting ranked him top European goalie and you can read more about him here.
the boo birds make their presence felt as Philly makes their pick.
9:33PM The Blackhawks have Pittsburgh native Brandon Saad make the announcement that they select Teuvo Teravainen of Jokerit in Finnish Elite League with 18th pick of the NHL Entry Draft. Check out his profile. He was rose quickly in the draft rankings (7th to 2nd according to Central Scouting) after posting six goals and two assists in just three games at the 2012 U-18 Five Nations Cup.
9:28 PM Tomas Hertl of Slavia becomes the third European taken as the San Jose Sharks with the 17th pick.
9:24PM The Capitals use their second pick of the 1st round to selecte Plymouth Whalers right wing Thomas Wilson at No. 16. He was probably more notable for the 141 PIM he notched this season, but the big forward upped his game big time in the OHL playoffs, recording 13 points (7g-6a) in 13 games. It was the lowest a Canadian-born forward has been taken in the NHL Draft.
9:15PM We are back to the defensemen as the Senators take Codi Ceci of the Ottawa 67s with pick No. 15. He had quite the contigent in the stands and the "Codi" chants immediately ensued. To he put it mildly, he's an offensive-minded d-man who put up 60 points (17g-43a) in 64 games last season. Go here for his profile.
9:07PM And the Sabres pick Zemgus Girgensons, center for Dubuque of the USHL - the first U.S. Junior player taken this evening. Here is his profile. He is the first Latvian-born player to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft and is heading to the University of Vermont next year for his freshman season.
9:04PM Most of you know this already, but just to confirm... ..yes, Jordan Staal is getting married tonight. Gotta figure that would be hellacious news to receive on your wedding day usually, but he has to be excited about joining his brother in Carolina.
9:00PM Trade alert!! Calgary trades their 14th overall pick to Buffalo for Nos. 21 and 42 in this year's draft.
8:57PM Dallas selects Kitchener center Radek Faksa. He played professional in the Czech Republic before coming across the Atlantic and posting 66 points (29g-37a) in 62 games. He led all OHL rookies in goals, assists, points, GWG (6) and plus-minus (+19).
8:52PM Mikhal Grigorenko was rated third amongst North American Skaters by Central Scouting and was taken 12th by the Buffalo Sabres. The Quebec Ramparts center was the leading rookie scorer in the QMJHL this past season with 85 points (40g-45a) in 50 games. His info can be found here. Seems like a good pick up by the Sabres.
8:45PM The Capitals take the top rated European skater prospect in Filip Forsberg from Leksand. You can check out his profile here. Has to be considered a coup for Washington that the top-ranked European prospect(Central Scouting) was available at No. 11.
8:42PM Back from the media scrum downstairs with Derrick. Will try to get that video up later. In the meantime, the Jets take Jacob Trouba at No.9 and Slater Koekkoek goes to Tampa Bay at No. 10. That's seven defensemen in a row and eight of the first 10. Think this is a draft heavy with defensive talent? By the way, Washington taking their sweet time with their pic and Commissioner Gary Bettman just gave it to them "Washington. you're on the clock. Let's go."
8:13PM Defenseman Derrick Pouliot from Portland of the WHL selected by Pittsburgh at No. 8. Check out the newest Penguin here. Heading downstairs to talk to Derrick. I'l be back...
8:09PM Unbelievable news. After rejecting Pittsburgh's offer for a 10-year extension, Jordan Staal is traded to Carolina for their 1st round pick tonight (#8), Brandon Sutter and current Boston College defensman Brian Domoulin. Pittsburgh is on the clock!

7:57PM And the Ducks take the first European in this draft at No. 6 with defenseman Hampus Lindholm. By far the best name of the first six picks so far. Read about him here. Scouts rave about his passing skill and the fact he helped carry his team, Rogle-Jr., in the playoffs to a spot in the Swedish Elite League nexst season.
7:51PM Trade Announcement! Caps and Hershey Bears forward Cody Eakin has been shipped to Dallas with a 2nd rd draft pick (54th overall) in exchange for Mike Ribeiro.
7:46PM Morgan Rielly is off the board to Toronto with the fifth pick. Another player who had his season ended early by a torn ACL. He returned for the playoffs however to help the Edmonton Oil Kings to WHL Conference Final. Morgan's profile. For those keeping score at home, that's two Oil King players taken in the first five picks of the draft.
7:42PM The New York Islander take D-man Griffin Reinhart from the Edmonton Oil Kings at No. 4. Ranked tenth among North American skaters. bit.ly/LoAM8v. His father Paul played in the NHL, but Griffin's 6-4 size far surpasses his dad's (5-11), though their offensive styles of play are similar.
....and the boos reign down as Toronto is announced to on the clock for the next pick.
7:30PM Pittsburgh fans torn between booing because its Montreal and cheering for the appreciation they're giving the city....Another Sarnia Sting player off the board. Alexander Galchenyuk goes to the Canadiens with the third pick. Here is Alex's profile. Alex's 2011-12 season was limited to 2 games because of a torn ACL. Great talent to still earn the No. 3 pick.
7:24PM With the No. 2 pick, the Blue Jackets select Ryan Murray of the Everett Silvertips (WHL). Those in know say he is the NHL ready of the top talent in this year's draft. He was the young captain in Everett history when he first wore the 'C' in 2011-12. More on Ryan here.
...perhaps most importantly, he executed the exit off stage perfectly.
7:15PM And so it begins...the Edmonton Oilers take Nail Yakupov from the Sarnia Sting with the No. 1 overall pick. Awkward Oscars-esque exit. Tried to go down the stairs at the front of the stage before being directed off stage left. Check this out on Yakupov http://bit.ly/O2nW18
7:09PM Gary Bettman comes to the podium to start the ceremonies and the Edmonton Oilers are officially on the clock...
6:56PM Fans chant MVP! as Evgeni Malkin highlights roll on the jumbotron. More cheers quickly follow for the Sidney Crosby montage.
6:52PM Philadelphia gets a racous round of boos during roll call. Pittsburgh = huge cheers of course.
