MacKENZIE GIVES CRUNCH 4-3 WIN OVER PENGUINS
WILKES-BARRE, PA – Derek MacKenzie scored a pair of third period goals, giving the Syracuse Crunch a 4-3 win against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza on Sunday evening.
The loss dropped the Penguins record to 8-6-0-1 on the year, while Syracuse moved atop the North Division standings with a 12-3-0-1 mark.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton jumped out to a 2-0 lead on early goals by Janne Pesonen and Jeff Taffe, before John Vigilante poked a shot past John Curry to pull the Crunch within one at the end of 20 minutes.
Craig MacDonald netted the only goal of the second frame to tie the game for the Crunch, before MacDonald netted a power play goal (a four-on-three advantage) with six-and-a-half minutes left to give the visitors their first lead of the night. Chris Minard countered with his league-high 14th goal of the season at 16:05, but MacDonald struck late with his fifth of the season with 36 seconds left to secure the win.
The Pens will get another crack at the Crunch this Wednesday night, when the two clubs meet again in Wilkes-Barre.
NOTES: Pesonen now has goals in three consecutive games...Minard extended his point streak to 14 games with a goal and an assist on the night...Paul Bissonnette returned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lineup after being assigned to the team from Pittsburgh on Saturday.
