WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Jayson Megna tallied two goals, including the shorthanded game-winner, and Brian Gibbons registered a goal and two assists as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins upended the Adirondack Phantoms, 6-3, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Twelve different players registered a point in helping the Penguins to their best start since 2010-11.
The Penguins quickly got out of the gates and jumped ahead, 1-0, just 1:08 into the first period. Gibbons started things off when he intercepted the puck at the Phantoms blueline and flipped a pass into the high slot that Megna settled down before firing a shot past Adirondack goaltender Cal Heeter.
It did not take long for Adirondack to even the score as Bruno Gervais rocketed a slapshot from the right circle that found its way over the shoulder of Jeff Deslauriers at 3:37.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went back on top 1:15 later when Dominic Uher raced down the right wing with the puck and slid a centering feed to the crease that Tom Kuhnhackl banged home for his first of the season and a 2-1 Penguins lead.
Some quick scoring in the second period then helped the Penguins build a three-goal cushion. After a face-off win by Gibbons, Philip Samuelsson sailed a wrist shot from the point that Adam Payerl redirected past Heeter at 5:14 to make the score, 3-1.
Exactly four minutes later, Megna and Gibbons flashed their magic on the penalty kill for the Penguins’ third shorthanded goal of the season. Gibbons threw a shoulder fake at the far dot and feathered the puck toward Heeter, where Megna knocked it in for this third goal of the year.
Adirondack’s Nick Cousins cut the Penguins’ lead down to two at 10:27 of the period with his first pro goal, but Uher responded with a blast from the left circle that found the top corner of the Phantom’s net.
Gibbons capped off his night with a power play goal mid-way through the third. Deslauriers stopped 22-of-25 shots to raise his record to 4-0-0.
