PENGUINS PUSH PAST PORTLAND IN OVERTIME

Penguins Push Past Portland in Overtime
Kolarik nets another overtime game-winner

PORTLAND, Maine – Chad Kolarik’s overtime heroics lifted the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins past the Portland Pirates, 4-3, on Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Just 38 seconds into overtime, on the seventh power play of the night for the Penguins, Kolarik threw the puck on net from the slot.  On the way towards Pirates goaltender Mike Lee, the puck banked off a Portland defenseman and into the net, giving the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the overtime victory.

It was a tale of two periods as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took the 2-0 lead in the first and Portland struck twice in the second.

Joe Morrow lit the lamp at 7:45 with his fourth of the season on the power play to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the first.  Morrow dropped down from the point to the near circle and floated a wrist shot through a screen just inside the far post.

Two minutes later, Jayson Megna scored his fourth of the year, tipping home a Kolarik shot to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the two-goal cushion.

Portland found another gear in the second, tying the game up in a span of 1:27 with goals by Chris Conner and rookie Chris Brown.  Conner scored at 14:13 and Brown, with his team leading 21st of the year, ripped a wrist shot over the glove of Thiessen on the short side at 15:40 to knot the game at two.

Brown gave the Pirates their first lead of the season in regulation over the Penguins with a breakaway goal just a minute and a half into the third, beating Thiessen low to the blocker side. The Penguins would battle back as Zach Sill tied the game at three.  Sill, posted up on the goal line, slipped the puck under the pads of Lee.

Thiessen picked up his 12th win of the year, making 21 stops, while Lee made 40 saves for Portland.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return to action on Sunday, March 10 at 5:00 PM as they visit the Manchester Monarchs.  Tune in on 102.3 The Mountain or AHLLive.com
