WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Nick Drazenovic’s dazzling first period goal proved to be the game-winner as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Hershey Bears by a score of 3-1 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Brian Gibbons collected a goal and an assist to raise team-leading point total to 22 and register his eighth multi-point match of the year.
It was Hershey striking first just 1:55 into the contest when Derek Whitmore was left alone in front to tap a Ryan Stoa centering feed past the left side of Penguins goalie Jeff Deslauriers.
Five minutes later, after a whistle left the Penguins on the penalty kill, Gibbons stole a puck from the Hershey defense and rushed in on a breakaway. Putting the puck past the stick side of Bears goalie David Leggio, Gibbons scored his second shorthanded goal of the season to knot the score at one.
With only 1:01 left on the clock before the first intermission, Chris Conner used a stick lift at center ice to gain possession for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Breaking into the Hershey zone, he passed it cross ice to Drazenovic, who stickhandled around the goaltender before tucking a backhander inside the left post to make score, 2-1, in favor of the Penguins.
The score remained the same until the 18:43 mark of the third as Jayson Megna’s intended pass from the sidewall, bounced off the ice in front of the Bears crease and over the blocker of Leggio.
Deslauriers is now tied for first in the AHL with nine wins after turning away 21-of-22 shots. On the other side of the ice, Hershey’s David Leggio made 18 saves on 21 shots.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 7-of-7 on the penalty kill on the night.
The Pens will hit the road next Wednesday, Nov. 20 as they take on the Rochester Americans at Blue Cross Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:05 PM. Catch the game on the Sports Hub 102 or on AHL Live.
