Dustin Jeffrey netted two goals and Brad Thiessen made 30 saves to lead the Penguins to a 4-2 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Friday night. The game was the first regular season home contest for the Checkers, the new AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Jeffrey opened the scoring with an unassisted power play goal midway through the first period. Jerome Samson tallied during a 5-on-3 power play for the Checkers to tie the score early in the second. But Jeffrey put the Pens back in front for good just 1:33 later, scoring the team's first shorthanded tally of the year.
Joe Vitale stretched the lead to 3-1 with his second goal of the season late in the middle frame.
Former Hershey Bear Oskar Osala pulled the home club back to within one goal with his first of the season 3:00 into the third period. But Steve Wagner grabbed a goal back two minutes later to finish off the scoring.
