PENGUINS WEEKLY RELEASE - 12/10/12

PENGUINS WEEKLY RELEASE #9
Extra Time Unkind to Pens Over Weekend
Win streak snapped, but point streak reaches seven games

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS

Friday, December 7: PENGUINS 4, Bears  5(OT)…
Kevin Marshall’s goal at 3:18 of overtime gave Hershey its fourth win in five meetings versus the Penguins this season.

After the Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Penguins responded with a power play goal by Benn Ferriero and an even-strength tally later in the period.  Robert Bortuzzo’s first goal of the season put WBS on top, 3-2, at 1:29 of the second.  The Penguins got a game-tying power play marker from Eric Tangradi to eventually force overtime.

Ferriero and Tangradi each recorded a goal and assist.  Jeff Zatkoff’s six-game winning streak came to an end.

Saturday, December 8: PENGUINS 3, Pirates 4 (SO)…
For the second time in as many meetings, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to build a 3-0 lead over Portland only to see the Pirates rally back and force a shootout.  Unlike the first time when the Penguins prevailed, on this night it was the Pirates coming away victorious with a 4-3 shootout win.

Trevor Smith and Jayson Megna scored 44 seconds apart early in the first to help WBS go up by two.  Riley Holzapfel made it 3-0 midway through the second period with his seventh goal of the season.

The Penguins were unable to get the puck by Pirates goalie Mike Lee – making his AHL debut – during four rounds of the shootout.  Rob Klinkhammer and former Penguin Chris Connor beat Brad Thiessen to complete the comeback for Portland. Thiessen made 30 saves through overtime for WBS.

UPCOMING GAMES

Wednesday, December 12, 7:00 PM: Penguins at DEVILS… 102.3 the Mountain
The Penguins battle the Devils for the second time in the four-game season series.  Wilkes-Barre/Scranton notched a 5-4 shootout win over the Devils on Nov. 25 in Atlantic City, NJ.  Albany has won three straight (7-8-0-5), but sits in fifth place in the Northeast Division.  Goaltender Keith Kinkaid has allowed just three goals in his last three starts, while also posting a shutout and a .970 save percentage.

Friday, December 14, 7:05 PM: PENGUINS vs. Senators… 102.3 the Mountain
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Binghamton face off for the third time this season with both teams having claimed a victory on home ice.  The Senators recently tied a franchise record with nine straight wins before falling to Norfolk on Saturday. It was the first defeat for Binghamton since a 1-0 shootout loss to the Penguins on Nov. 7.

Saturday, December 15, 7:30 PM: Penguins vs. CRUNCH… 102.3 the Mountain
The eight-game series between the Pens and Crunch reaches its halfway point when the two teams take the ice on Saturday.  WBS has won back-to-back games against Syracuse including a 5-3 victory during their last match-up on Nov. 30.  The Crunch lead the East Division with a record of 14-6-1-2.  Last weekend, Syracuse lost consecutive games for only the second time this season.
