PENGUINS WEEKLY RELEASE #17
WBS Sweeps Three-Game Weekend
Team has won nine of ten, five in a row at home
LAST WEEK’S RESULTS
Friday, February 1: PENGUINS 4, Monarchs 1
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff just missed recording a second straight shutout against his former team, but otherwise stopped 21 shots as the Penguins upended the Monarchs, 4-1, in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
A scoreless tie was broken by Joe Morrow midway through the second period, but the floodgates were officially opened later thanks to the efforts of the Penguins’ penalty kill. Trevor Smith potted a shorthanded goal with 1:17 left in the second and Zach Sill did the same 1:32 into the third period.
Riley Holzapfel made it 4-0 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 35 seconds before Vincent LoVerde got Manchester on the board with his first of the season.
Saturday, February 2: PENGUINS 3, Phantoms 0
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton limited Adirondack to 20 shots and Brad Thiessen stopped them all in a 3-0 victory at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Warren Peters’ first of his two-goal game proved to be the game-winner, coming at 10:53 of the opening period. Alex Grant doubled the Penguins’ lead with 47.7 seconds until the second intermission with his third goal of the season.
Peters completed the scoring with 1:31 left in regulation as he tallied his seventh of the year.
Sunday, February 3: Penguins 2, BEARS 1 (OT)
Chad Kolarik’s power play goal with 10.8 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Penguins to a 2-1 win over the Bears at GIANT Center on Sunday afternoon.
As was the case in their last meeting on Jan. 20 at the AHL Outdoor Classic, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to rally past Hershey despite a 1-0 deficit in the third period. Boyd Kane had put the Bears ahead on the man-advantage at 9:34 of the second. Riley Holzapfel was able to respond for the Penguins with 7:57 left in regulation.
Jeff Zatkoff stopped 20 shots to gather his fourth win in a row and raise his season record to 15-12-0.
