W-B/Scranton look to send series back to Newfoundland

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS

TUESDAY, MAY 1: Penguins 1, ICECAPS 3…
A 34-save performance could not stop St. John’s from taking Game One of the Eastern Conference Semifinal series as they skated to a 3-1 victory over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at Mile One Centre.

Cal O’Reilly opened the scoring with a power play goal at 4:42 of the first and held a 1-0 lead after one, despite being outshot 20-4 in the opening frame.

Brock Trotter tallied goals early in the second and third periods to rally the IceCaps for the win.  Garth Murray provided the insurance marker with 1:54 remaining.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 2: Penguins 3, ICECAPS 1…
The Penguins were able to flip the script on the IceCaps and dominate for a 3-1 win in Newfoundland.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton held a 28-11 shot advantage through two periods, but it was not until the first five minutes of the third that a 1-1 tie was broken by Joey Mormina’s shorthanded goal and a power play tally by Jason Williams.

Brad Thiessen made 22 saves in the win for the Penguins.

SATURDAY, MAY 5:  PENGUINS 1, IceCaps 2 (OT)…
Brock Trotter notched his second two-goal game of the series and potted the winner in overtime to give St. John’s a 2-1 win and series lead over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Trotter’s first period goal held up until the final 62 seconds of regulation, when Eric Tangradi scored with the extra attacker to force overtime.

Midway through the extra session, Trotter finished a 2-on-1 rush to clinch the victory for the IceCaps.

SUNDAY, MAY 6:  PENGUINS 2, IceCaps 3 (OT)…

St. John’s fought back from an early 2-0 deficit and was once again able to triumph in overtime as Ben Maxwell scored 27 seconds in to help his team to a 3-2 win and a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Colin McDonald and Eric Tangrai each scored just over two minutes apart to help the Penguins jump out to the early edge.  Derek Meech (PPG) and Maxime Macenauer answered in the second period with goals for the IceCaps.
