PENGUINS WORK PAST SENATORS IN GAME 2

Game Sheet

Penguins Work Past Senators in Game 2
W-B/Scranton takes series 2-0 lead; Game 3 at home on Thursday

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were able to hold off the Binghamton Senators to skate away with a 3-2 victory at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena and take 2-0 lead in the best-of-five, first-round series.

The game was knotted at one heading into the second period and it was the Penguins striking twice to open up a 3-1 advantage.  Chris Collins put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead at 12:03 of the frame with a long wrist shot from right boards that dipped under the glove of Senators netminder Nathan Lawson.

Warren Peters made it a two-goal margin for the Penguins with just 1.6 seconds left on the clock in the middle frame.  After Binghamton failed to clear their zone, Dylan Reese sent a shot toward the crease that a fallen Peters was able to slide across the goal line.

The Senators looked to close the gap late in regulation with a power play chance and their net empty in favor of the extra attacker.  Chris Wideman cut Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s lead to one on a redirect of Stephane Da Costa’s shot with 18.6 seconds until the end of the regulation.

Time would run out on the Senators on the ensuing faceoff as Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff made 35 stops for his second win of the postseason.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got the opportunity to open the scoring for the second straight game after Binghamton’s Derek Grant was assessed a high sticking double-minor only 18 seconds into the game.  The Penguins would convert as Riley Holzapfel put back a rebound chance in front for a 1-0 lead at 2:48.  Lawson would go on to make 21 saves on 24 shots for Binghamton.

With just over five minutes remaining in the first period, Mark Stone fired a pass from the right wing of the Penguins zone that slipped Matt Puempel behind the defense for a wrist shot under the blocker of Zatkoff that tied the match, 1-1.
