Penguins Fall to Americans in OT in First Preseason Game
Manderson and Thompson score for W-B/Scranton
BRIGHTON, N.Y. – Eric Locke’s game-winning goal at 2:56 of overtime gave the Rochester Americans a 3-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in preseason action at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex.
The two teams skated into the extra period with the scored tied, 2-2, before Rochester’s Dan Catenacci slid a pass across the crease that hit Locke at the back post for a backhand shot over the blocker of Penguins netminder Andy Chiodo.
The Americans scored twice on four power plays in the first period to own a 2-1 edge heading into the intermission. Phil Varone struck at 5:52 and made it 1-0 for Rochester when he swatted a bouncing puck in the crease past starting goalie Eric Hartzell.
Denver Manderson helped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton respond 27 seconds later, leading a 2-on-1 rush and snapping a wrister from the far circle that bounced in off the left post.
Rochester went back on top at 8:49 during a 5-on-4 advantage as Chad Ruhwedel’s slapshot from the point found its way to the back of the net.
With their first power play of the contest, the Penguins were able even the score once again midway through the second frame. Stickhandling with the puck in Americans zone, Paul Thompson lifted a shot from a tough angle that found a sliver of space over the shoulder of goaltender Connor Knapp.
Hartzell finished with 14 saves on 16 shots through 29:29 of play. Chiodo stopped 15-of-16 in relief. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-of-6 on the penalty kill.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will host the Rochester Americans in exhibition action on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:05 p.m. and the Hershey Bears on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 5:05 p.m.
