Penguins Outlast Devils for Shootout Win
WBS wins its ninth in last 11 games
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Tom Kuhnhackl recorded his first two goals in a Penguins uniform and goaltender Brad Thiessen was a perfect 5-for-5 in the shootout as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton came from behind to defeat the Albany Devils, 5-4, at Boardwalk Hall.
The Penguins looked to break a game deadlocked, 3-3, with a power play midway through the third period. It was Devils who instead took advantage as Jacob Josefson picked off a pass to the point and raced in for the breakaway goal that put Albany ahead at 10:22.
That lead lasted less than two minutes as Kuhnhackl combined with his linemates Brian Gibbons and Jayson Megna to force a turnover deep in the Devils zone. Megna found Kuhnhackl in front for his second goal of the game and evened the match, 4-4.
The two teams would head to the shootout after either side was unable to gather the go-ahead marker through the rest of regulation and the overtime period.
Through the first four rounds, both goaltenders had a clean slate until Megna waited out Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid and fired a wrist shot to the back of the net. Thiessen followed up with a save on Josefson in the bottom of round five to clinch the win. He finished with 28 saves to raise his record to 3-2-0. Kinkaid stopped 31-of-35.
Albany struck first at 9:32 when a 3-on-2 rush was completed by Mattias Tedenby.
Three minutes later, Kuhnhackl knotted the score as he backhanded a nice feed from Gibbons over Kinkaid. Kuhnhackl returned the favor soon thereafter, setting up Gibbons on the near post at 15:35 to make the score, 2-1, in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s favor.
Albany needed only 70 seconds to respond when Bobby Butler scored on a man-advantage, but Trevor Smith found the back of the net for the Penguins with only 0.1 seconds left in the first.
The lone tally of the second period was by Albany’s Adam Henrique at 13:16, who put back the rebound after a face-off win by Butler.
Kuhnhackl (2g-1a) and Gibbons (1-2a) each finished with three points on the night.
