PENS TAKE BITE OUT OF BULLDOGS, 4-2

Andrew Ebbett led the offensive attack with a three point night (2+1), as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 4-2 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs at the FirstOntario Centre on Saturday night.  The game was the first meeting between the two clubs since a 4-1 Bulldogs win on February 21, 2009.

The victory was the second in the past three games for the Penguins (31-20-3-5, 70 points), while the Bulldogs (25-27-1-4, 55 points) dropped their second consecutive decision.

Gabriel Dumont opened the scoring at the 15:17 mark of the first period, beating Pens’ netminder Peter Mannino for his team-leading 15th goal of the season.

That was the only time the Bulldogs would lead on the evening, though.

Ebbett tied the score 42 seconds into the second period, taking advantage of Davis Drewskie’s holding call late in the opening frame to net the visitors’ first power play goal of the evening.

Tom Kostopoulos needed even less time to convert on the Penguins’ next chance on the man advantage, tallying just three seconds after Greg Pateryn was sent off for cross checking at 2:18 of the second.  It was the team-leading 21st goal for the Wilkes-Barre captain, and his 13th power play marker.

The Penguins picked up their third goal of the middle period at 10:59 off of the stick of Denver Manderson.  It was the second goal of the season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton rookie and his first game-winner.

Mike Blunden tacked on a power play goal early in the third period, and the Bulldogs continued to push the Penguins, outshooting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 15-7 in the final stanza.  But Ebbett’s empty net goal with 57 seconds to play proved to be the only score registered in the last 20 minutes to cap off the scoring.

Mannino stopped 30 shots to pick up his third win of the season, while Robert Mayer turned aside 31 pucks in defeat.

The Penguins finish off their five-game road swing Sunday afternoon in Toronto, where they will face the Marlies at 3:00pm.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton returns home next Friday night when they will host the Bulldogs at 7:05pm. It’s another ANYTHING GOES FRIDAY, with prize giveaways throughout the night, as well as our $1,000 giveaway courtesy of Cross Valley Federal Credit Union.
