Ryan Craig has been named the 16th captain in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins history, it was announced on Thursday by head coach John Hynes. Voting for team captain was done completely by the players, Hynes said, and the vote was unanimous.
“We’re happy with the players we have, we have great experience, and all are true professionals,” Hynes said. “Ryan fits the captain’s mold perfectly and we know all the captains will do a great job on and off the ice.”
In addition to the eight games Craig, 28, has played with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season to date, he also appeared in 244 American Hockey League games with the Hershey Bears, Springfield Falcons, and Norfolk Admirals. The center has amassed 126 points (69 goals, 57 assists) in that time frame, including a career season-high 45 points last year in Norfolk.
The native of Abbotsford, BC has also appeared in 184 NHL games, all with the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording 63 points (32 goals, 31 assists).
Prior to turning pro, Craig spent six seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL), recording 268 points (137 goals, 131 assists) and 256 penalty minutes.
Craig joined the Penguins as a free agent signing on July 2. He was originally selected by the Lightning in the eighth round (255th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Joining Craig as alternate captains for 2010-11 are defenseman Andrew Hutchinson and left wing Tim Wallace. Other players that will serve as alternate captains, in the event of injury or recall, are right wing Nick Johnson and left wing Brett Sterling.
