SHOOTOUT WIN MAKES IT SIX STRAIGHT FOR PENGUINS
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins extended their winning streak to six games with a 2-1 shootout win over the Binghamton Senators on Saturday at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The win also allowed the Penguins to stay a perfect 6-0-0-on the road..
A strong Penguins forecheck created the game’s first goal as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton broke the scoreless tie at 8:05 of the second. Ryan Schnell threw a check that freed the puck up for Brandon Fazio, who tapped a pass over to Zach Sill. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward sent a knuckler under the glove of Robin Lehner for his first of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton seemed poised to make it back-to-back shutouts to complete the weekend, but a late power play for Binghamton would even the score. With 1:54 left in regulation, Mike Hoffman fired a point shot that slid through the pads of Brad Thiessen to force overtime.
The extra session would fail to produce a goal and the two teams headed to the shootout. Pat Cannone and Jack Downing responded for Binghamton after Colin McDonald and Niko Dimitrakos converted for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Bryan Lerg then put the Penguins on top in round five and Thiessen denied the ensuing chance by Jim O’Brien to seal the win.
Thiessen stretched his personal win streak to six games with 28 saves on the night. He has allowed only a goal per contest over his last six starts.
