THIESSEN SHUTS DOWN BEARS IN PRESEASON FINALE
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins wrapped up their preseason with a 3-1 win against the Adirondack Phantoms on Sunday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The Penguins were able to use a pair of 5-on-3 power play goals and an 18-save effort from goalie Brad Thiessen to skate away with the victory.
Working on the two-man advantage midway through the second, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton built a 2-0 lead when Geoff Walker came out of the corner and found Paul Thompson alone on the back post for the easy tap-in.
At the halfway point of the third period, the Penguins were able to play another 5-on-3 advantage to perfection to put themselves up by three. After a scramble in front of the Phantoms’ net, Ryan Craig fed a pass across the crease that Eric Tangradi knocked over a sprawled Jason Bacashihua.
For the first time this preseason, it was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton breaking the scoreless tie. Cody Chupp made it 1-0 in favor of the Penguins at 5:36 of the second with a backhand attempt that trickled under the glove of Bacashihua and across the goal line.
Olivier Lauridsen would foil Thiessen’s bid for a shutout with a power play tally that came with 1:11 left in regulation.
The win allowed the Penguins to go perfect over their three-game, three-day weekend and finish the exhibition schedule with a 3-1-0-0 record.
