Wilson’s Three Points Lead Admirals Past Penguins
Home stand continues next Wednesday versus Binghamton
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Kyle Wilson registered a goal and two assists to help the Norfolk Admirals defeat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 4-1, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
By the seven-minute mark of the first period, the Admirals had leapt out to a 2-0 lead in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. A give-and-go with Devante Smith-Pelly saw Kyle Wilson unleash a wrist shot from the slot that beat Brad Thiessen over the glove at 4:55 of the opening frame.
Just over two minutes later, Admirals forward Chris Wagner used a Penguins defenseman as a screen to send the puck to the top right corner of the net and double Norfolk’s edge.
The Penguins cut the Admirals’ lead in half at 13:13 of the second while skating on a 5-on-4 power play. Controlling the puck at the near circle, Chad Kolarik drew three defenders to him before slipping a pass that Alex Grant shelved with a wrister from the high slot.
Norfolk got the opportunity to respond immediately and go up, 3-1, after Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was assessed consecutive penalties. As the two-man advantage expired, Patrick Maroon took a pass at the goal line from Wilson, quickly cut toward the Penguins crease and jammed in his own rebound at 17:20.
The Admirals stretched their lead to three with 1:02 left before the intermission as Mat Clark’s point shot was deflected and partially stopped by Thiessen, but Smith-Pelly was on the doorstep to poke it across the goal line.
Thiessen took the loss for Penguins with 19 saves on 23 shots over 40 minutes of play. Jeff Zatkoff stopped all nine shots he faced in one period of relief.
