ZOLNIERCZYK, SAMUELSSON RECALLED

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Philip Samuelsson and forward Harry Zolnierczyk from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL), it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

For Samuelsson, 22, this marks the first time in his career that he has been recalled to the NHL. This season he has totaled six assists and a plus-3 in 26 AHL games with WBS.

The 6-for-2, 194-pound Samuelsson is the son of Ulf Samuelsson, a defenseman on Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams in 1991 and ’92.

The Samuelssons are looking to become the fifth father-son duo to suit up for the Penguins, joining Wayne Hicks (1967-68) and Alex Hicks (1996-98); Gilles Meloche (1985-88) and Eric Meloche (2001-04); Greg Malone (1976-83) and Ryan Malone (2003-08); and Bob Johnson (1974-75) and Brent Johnson (2009-12).

A native of Leksand, Sweden, Samuelsson is in his third professional season. Last year he established career highs across the board for WBS in games played (65), goals (2), assists (8), points (10) and plus/minus (+10). He added two assists in 15 postseason contests.

Originally drafted by the Penguins in the second round (61st overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Samuelsson played two seasons of college hockey at Boston College, helping the Eagles win a NCAA national championship as a freshman in 2010.

Zolnierczyk, 26, is in his third stint of the season with the Penguins. He was scoreless in three regular-season contests earlier in the year.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Zolnierczyk has scored a team-leading (tied) 10 goals in 21 games with WBS this season. He has added four helpers for a total of 14 points.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Zolnierczyk has appeared in 47 career NHL games with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, totaling seven points (3G-4A) and 71 penalty minutes.

The Penguins have placed defenseman Kris Letang on injured reserve.
