Penguins start the New Year with seven-game win streak

First-place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (28-8-3-0) prepares for division opponents

 

Weekly Rewind

Wednesday, Jan. 11 – PENGUINS 2 at Toronto 1
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner from Tom Sestito with 3:10 left. It was the Pens’ first regulation win at Toronto since Jan. 26, 2013.

 

Friday, Jan. 13 – PENGUINS 3 at Rochester 2
The Penguins cashed in twice on the power play en route to beating the Amerks. Carter Rowney returned to the Pens’ line-up for the first time in 18 games and had a goal and an assist.

 

Saturday, Jan. 14 – PENGUINS 3 at Syracuse 1
Tying a season-high, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton made it seven wins in a row with its victory over Syracuse. Rowney scored for the second-straight game, and Tom Kostopoulos earned his 300th career assist in the AHL.

 

Monday, Jan. 16– PENGUINS 1 at Syracuse 4
Rowney found the back of the net for the third game in a row, but the Penguins saw their streak come to an end.

 

The Week Ahead

Wednesday, Jan. 18 – PENGUINS at Hershey
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton takes on Hershey for the seventh time this season. At Giant Center, the Pens are 3-1-0-0 this season and have put up three come-from-behind, overtime victories.

 

Friday, Jan. 20 – PENGUINS at Lehigh Valley
The top two squads in the Atlantic Division face-off for just the second time this season. The Pens are 9-2-1-1 all-time at PPL Center, but the Phantoms won their last meeting, 4-1.

 

Saturday, Jan. 21 – PENGUINS vs. Hershey
The Penguins return home for the first time in seven games, and they take on the Bears for the second time of the week. Less than 900 tickets remain for this clash between bitter rivals.

 

Ice Chips

– The Penguins’ seven-game winning streak was their second of the 2016-17 season.

– Dating back to before his injury, Carter Rowney has seven points (5G-2A) in his last seven games.

– Tristan Jarry is in a three-way tie for the most wins in the league with 16.

– Rowney’s current three-game goal-scoring streak is the third of his career. He has never scored in four-straight games before at any point in his pro career.

– Of Dominik Simon’s five goals this season, four have been game-winners.

– Tom Kostopoulos is six points away from reaching 500 career AHL points.
