NAILERS NEWS – DECEMBER 4, 2017

The Wheeling Nailers sit in a tie with the Manchester Monarchs at the top of the ECHL’s North Division with a 12-7-2-0 record this season.  Here’s your weekly look at the team in our NAILERS NOTES feature.


RECENT ACTION

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1 VS. READING (4-3 LOSS):  The Nailers carried a 3-2 lead into the third period, but a pair of power play goals from the Royals allowed the visitors to pull out a one-goal victory.  Cody Wydo (1+1) led the offensive attack for Wheeling, and extended his point streak to four games (3+3=6)

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2 VS. READING (5-4 OT WIN):  Once again Reading rallied late, posting a pair of goals in the third period to force overtime.  But Garrett Meuers popped home his team-leading 12th goal of the season at 2:10 of the extra frame to pull out the win for the Nailers.  Zach Tolkinen picked up his first two goals of the season in the win.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 VS. FORT WAYNE (3-2 LOSS):  A rested Fort Wayne squad (they didn’t play the previous night) rolled into Wheeling and took home a one-goal victory.Wydo and Dan Milan picked up goals in the loss for the Nailers.


THE WEEK AHEAD

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6 @ READING:  The Royals currently sit in third place in the ECHL’s North Division with a 11-7-2-0 mark, just two points behind the division leading Nailers and Monarchs.  Only five points separate the first place teams from fifth place Adirondack in the division.  Reading is one of three teams in the league without a shorthanded goal this year.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8 @ INDY:  The Nailers begin a two-game swing through the Central Division against the Fuel, who currently sit in seventh place with a 5-10-2-1 mark.  Indy’s 48 goals scored is the second-fewest in the ECHL.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9 @ TOLEDO:  The Walleye (14-4-2-1) carry a four-game point streak (3-0-0-1) into the week, and have extended their lead at the top of the Central to six points over the second place Cincinnati Cyclones.   Toledo paces the league with a 90.9% success rate on the penalty kill (7 goals against/77 times shorthanded).


LEAGUE LEADERS

The NAILERS lead the entire ECHL with a  25.5% conversion rate on the power play (22 goals/98 attempts)

CODY WYDO is third in the ECHL with 27 points, tied for fourth with 12 goals and tied for seventh with 15 assists

REID GARDINER is tied for fifth in the ECHL with 24 points, tied for eighth with 11 goals and tied for second with four game-winning goals

GARRETT MEURS is tied for 10th in the league with 23 points, tied for fourth with 12 goals and tied for first with two overtime goals

HUNTER FEJES is tied for eighth in the ECHL with 11 goals and tied for eighth with four power play goals

CAM BROWN is tied for third in the ECHL with 18 assists.

NICK SORKIN is tied for fifth in the ECHL with 16 assists

NAILERS NEWS – NOVEMBER 21, 2017

The Wheeling Nailers have moved to the top of the ECHL’s North Division after posting a 2-1-0-0 record last week.  Get up to speed on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins affiliate in this edition of NAILERS NEWS.

RECENT ACTION

November 14, 2017:  Cody Wydo and Freddy Tiffels each scored a pair of goals in a 6-4 victory over the Adirondack Thunder.  Cam Brown and Garrett Meurs also each registered two points.  Sean Maguire picked up the win while recording 34 saves.

November 17, 2017:  Derek Army led the Nailers attack with a goal and four points in a 6-2 win against the Norfolk Admirals.  Garrett Meurs (1G, 2A) and Dylan Zink (1G, 1A) also recorded multi-point games in the win.  Sean Maguire stopped 36 shots.

November 18, 2017:  Garrett Meurs recorded the only goal in the 4-1 loss during the second game of a back-to-back with Admirals.  Zach Tolkinen and Will King assisted on the on goal of the game for the Nailers.  Along with the assist, King stopped 30 shots.

LEAGUE LEADERS

Cody Wydo is third in the ECHL with 20 points in 14 games played.  Wydo is tied for 12th in the league with eight goals, and is eighth in the league in assists with 12.

Reid Gardiner is fourth in points with 19 and tied for second in the league in goals with 11.

Garrett Meurs is tied for 10th in the league with 17 points and is tied for seventh in the league with nine goals.

Cam Brown is tied for third in the ECHL with 14 assists.

Nick Sorkin is tied for fifth in the ECHL in assists with 13.

Sean Maguire is tied for third in the league with six wins on the season.

NAILERS NEWS – NOVEMBER 13, 2017

NAILERS NOTES

The Wheeling Nailers are off to a solid start in ECHL action, posting a 7-2-2-0 mark through 11 games, good for the fourth-best points percentage in the league.  The Nailers took two of three contests this past weekend, and currently sit in second place in the North Division standings.


RECENT ACTION

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10 VS. TOLEDO (4-3 OT WIN)

Reid Gardiner netted his league-leading fourth game-winning goal – this one coming in overtime – to lead the Nailers to a 4-3 win against the Walleye at WesBanco Arena.  Wheeling took a 2-0 lead into the third frame thanks to goals by Hunter Fejes and Gardiner before Toldeo got on the board.  Cody Wydo reestablished the two-goal cushion before the visitors scored twice in a 1:06 span late in the game to force OT.  Sean Maguire made 30 saves in net.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT TOLEDO (5-3 LOSS)

Derek Army had a goal and an assist, while Gardiner posted a pair of helpers in the second game of the home-and-home series.  Freddie Tiffels, reassigned to Wheeling from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton earlier in the week, recorded his first pro goal in the defeat.  Cody Wydo netted his fourth goal of the season.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12 VS. NORFOLK (5-3 WIN)

Cody Wydo extended his goal streak to three games, picking up the game-winning goal, in the home win over the Admirals.  Garrett Meurs recorded his third multiple-goal game of the season, Cam Brown had three points (1+2) in the win, and Tiffels chipped in with two assists.  Goaltender Will King stopped 39 shots for his first professional win.


LEAGUE LEADERS

REID GARDINER is tied for second in the ECHL with 10 goals and 17 points, is tied for fourth with three power play goals, and leads the league with four game-winning goals.  He had his 10-game point streak snapped on Sunday against Norfolk.

CODY WYDO is tied for second in the ECHL with 17 points and 12 assists.

CAM BROWN is tied for second in the ECHL with 12 assists.

HUNTER FEJES is tied for second in the ECHL with four power play goals.


The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ next game takes place on Friday, November 17 when they travel to face the Binghamton Devils at 7:05 p.m.  The team returns him for a Thanksgiving eve contest with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Wednesday, November 22.
