The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will be celebrating fans from diverse backgrounds when we host Hockey Is For Everyone this Saturday against the Providence Bruins at 6:05.

The goal of HIFE is to drive positive social change and foster more inclusive communities. And the Penguins will be putting the spotlight on several local groups through in-arena and online presentations.

  1. DISABLED HOCKEY – Members and supporters of Special Olympics of Pennsylvania will be on hand to raise awareness of those with intellectual and physical disabilities in the sport.  A pregame torch lighting ceremony will take place, representing the ‘Flame of Hope’; an athlete walk will take place on the ice during the second intermission; and before the game fans can help the SOPA raise funds at an outdoor dunk tank, where members of the Pennsylvania State Police will be “Freezin’ for a Reason”.
  2. LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY – The Penguins will be highlighting the work of the NEPA Rainbow Alliance with a video interview conducted earlier this month with David Pearson from the group’s board.  Members of the organization will also be on hand at the game to provide more information.
  3. BLACK HOCKEY HISTORY – Check out our BREAKAWAY game program for an article highlighting the contributions of black players in the pro ranks.  We’ll also have a video interview with Jimel Calliste from the NAACP talking about the importance of inclusion in the sport.

All fans will also receive a Penguins All-Star Poster, courtesy of the Times Leader.
