WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced today that they have signed forward Colin Smith to an American Hockey League contract for the 2017-18 season.
A native of Edmonton, Alb., Smith is entering his fifth professional season, has never failed to reach the 30-point plateau, and is coming off back-to-back seasons in which he earned more than 40 points. In his AHL career, Smith has posted 54 goals and 114 assists for 168 points in 279 games with the San Antonio Rampage, Toronto Marlies and Lake Erie Monsters.
Smith, 24, split his last season between Toronto and San Antonio. In the first half of the year, he served as an alternate captain with the Marlies and put up eight goals and 20 assists for 28 points in 52 games. Smith was traded to the Rampage at the NHL trade deadline on Mar. 1, 2017. He then earned six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 21 games in San Antonio, giving him 47 total points on the season.
Drafted in the 7th round (192nd overall) of the 2012 NHL draft by the Colorado Avalanche, Smith has appeared in one NHL game, suiting up for Colorado against the Montréal Canadiens on Dec. 1, 2014.
Before turning pro, Smith was a stand-out forward in the Western Hockey League. In four seasons with the Kamloops Blazers, Smith scored at nearly a point-per-game pace, racking up 271 points (102G-169A) in 272 career games. At only 17-years-old, he was awarded the Doc Seamen Memorial Trophy, given to the WHL’s scholastic player of the year. In his final season with Kamloops, the five-foot 10-inch centerman was the only player to appear in every regular season game, led the team in points (106) and goals (41), while tying for the team-lead for both assists (65) and power-play goals (14).
