HERSHEY, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins emerged victorious in their preseason finale, scoring four unanswered goals to down the Hershey Bears, 4-1, at Giant Center on Sunday evening.

The two teams opened the scoring by trading goals just eight seconds apart in the first period. Joey Leach wired a slap shot into the Penguins’ net at 6:54 of the first period, giving the Bears a brief 1-0 lead until Sahir Gill answered back for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 7:02.

Gage Quinney put the Penguins on top, 2-1, beating Bears goalie Joe Cannata to the glove side with 48.6 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton continued its power play success from the previous night when Dominik Simon finished a picture perfect passing play on the man advantage at 17:05 of the second period, lifting the Penguins into a 3-1 lead.

Oskar Sundqvist scored for the second-straight game when he found the empty net while shorthanded at 17:44 of the third, ensuring a 4-1 victory for the Penguins.

Defenseman Tim Erixon ended up with the secondary assist on Sundqvist’s shorthanded empty-netter, bringing his point total in the contest to a game-high three (all of which were assists.)

Casey DeSmith made eight saves while manning the net for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the first period, while Doug Carr went unsolved on the 19 shots he faced in the second and third periods. Cannata finished the game having made 19 saves on 22 shots.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s next game is the 2016-17 season opener on Saturday, Oct. 15 against the Hartford Wolf Pack at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Game time for the Penguins’ season opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
