Oh, the places hockey players go!

Several members of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins made stops at local classrooms this week to take part in Read Across America. The annual event encourages reading in the classroom, and celebrates the birthday of none other than Dr. Seuss!

Pens players – including Chris Summers, Ben Sexton, Ryan Scarfo, Macoy Erkamps and Sam Miletic – spent time reading some of their favorite Dr. Seuss tomes, including “The Cat In The Hat”; “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”; “And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street”; and “Oh, The Places You’ll Go”.

The team’s Robo’s Readers Program is another initiative encouraging youngsters to experience the joys of a book. Now in its 12th year, the Robo’s Readers Program was established in honor of former Penguins defenseman Darcy Robinson, who passed away in 2007.

The program rewards students who read a minimum of 10 books with one free ticket voucher for a predetermined Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins game. The two classrooms who read the most books also receive a visit from Tux and a pair of Penguins players.

Approximately 4,500 students completed the program in the first half of the 2018-19 season, with schools reporting more than 100,000 books read.
